Kenya Bird Watching Safari

This Kenya safari or Kenya bird watching safari combines bird watching and game drives in search of the Big Five wildlife – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo in Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru.

Day 1: Nairobi – Masai Mara

Depart Nairobi for the world-renowned Masai Mara for excellent game/bird viewing. Arrive at Mara Sopa in time for lunch. Afterwards, set off for game drives till sunset. The vastness of the open savannah harbors the greatest animal spectacle with over one million wilder beasts crossing the swollen Mara river in search for fresh pastures. Migratory bird species also get refuge in the mara grasslands with more than 450 species been the highest checklist here. Other local and unusual birds in the Mara include Rock Cisticola, Rufous Bellied Heron, Denham’s Bustard, Black Coucal, Red Tailed chat, Pale Wren Warbler, Tabora Cisticola, Yellow Bellied Hyliota, Green-capped Eremomela and Magpie Shrike.

Day 2: Masai Mara

Morning and afternoon game drives and bird watching will be the main feature of the day. Masai Mara been the northern portion of the Great Plains ecosystem in the neighboring Tanzania called Serengeti, is home to the “big five” lion, buffalo, rhino, leopard and elephant as well cheetah, zebra, giraffe and vast herds of plain antelope and numerous and other wildlife.

Day 3: Masai Mara – Lake Nakuru

After breakfast, we leave Mara and head for Lake Nakuru Park, regarded as bird lover’s paradise – the greatest World ornithological spectacle on the Earth. After lunch at Lake Nakuru Lodge, set off for game drives in the park, which is famous due to millions of pink flamingoes lining on the lake shore. You will see the many wild animals in the park and in the Sanctuary to the Black Rhino, White Rhino and the Rothschild Giraffe. Here we’ll have the chance to look out at some of the common species like the Lesser and Greater Flamingoes, African fish Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Green Wood Hoopoes, Cliff Chat, Great White and Pink Backed Pelicans plus other intra- African Migrants.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, depart for the nearby Lake Naivasha. Lunch at Lake Naivasha Country Club. After lunch, we will spend the rest of the evening bird watching at the grounds of the Club as well as the lake shoreline. Optional visit to the Crescent Island, which is across the lake from Lake Naivasha Country Club.

Day 5: Lake Naivasha – Nairobi – Depart Home

After breakfast, go for birding at Naivasha. After lunch, drive towards Nairobi via Kinangop grasslands in search for Sharpe’s Longclaw and proceed on with another stop over at some lovely ponds for African and migratory Ducks. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to catch your international flight home.
