SKVEG 007: An Amazing 6-Days Safari to White Desert of Egypt

White Desert of Egypt

The White Desert, in Western Egypt, covers an area of about 6,000 square km and lies 500 km South West of Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. The White Desert borders Libya in the West, Sudan in the South and the Mediterranean in the North.

This is one of the most amazing and mysterious places to tour in Egypt. It is one of the few places in Egypt where you can go for days at a time without seeing a soul. Five isolated but thriving oases dot this otherwise uninhabited expanse: Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariyya, and to the North West of these, the Siwa.

The white outcroppings take on surreal forms and are best viewed at sunrise or sunset, when the sun turns the white into chalk pink and orange, or in the light of a full moon, which gives the landscape an eerie Arctic appearance.

Our safari to the White Desert starts in Cairo, where you have an opportunity to visit the Giza Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, then head to the magnificent Bahariya Oasis to start the safari trip in the White Desert. We will pass through the Black Desert of Egypt.

Day 3: Cairo and Bahariya Oasis

After breakfast at your hotel, we’ll get out of the city environment by taking a tour to Bahariya Oasis using a modern air conditioned vehicle.

Bahariya Oasis is approximately 300 km away from Cairo and the least technologically advanced Oasis in the country. Located in Sixth of October City Governorate, it has an art museum and the main agricultural products are guavas, mangos, dates, and olives.

There is also the ruin of a temple to Alexander the Great located within the Bahariya Oasis. It is believed by some Egyptologists that the Greek conqueror passed through Bahariya while returning from the oracle of Ammon at Siwa Oasis. Excavations of the Greco-Roman necropolis, known as the Valley of the Golden Mummies began in 1996. Approximately thirty-four tombs have been excavated from this area.

We will arrive in Bahariya Oasis in time for lunch. Alternatively, we can carry packed lunch from Cairo. We will take a walk tour around the old village of the oasis in the afternoon to see the groves of palms and fruit trees. At sunset, we will visit the ruin on a hill, “the English House” to enjoy the panoramic view. We will visit the village and shops in the evening. Overnight in Bahariya Oasis.

Day 4: Bahariya Oasis and White Desert

After breakfast in Bahariya Oasis, we will visit the Golden Valley of Mummies, then head to the White Desert, passing through the Black Desert and the Valley of El Haize. We will stop at the Crystal Mountain to see the quartz crystal and in the Valley of Agabat to see the volcanic rocks. We will camp in the White Desert, watching the stars.
